How to Convert a Word Document (DOCX) to PDF
Last reviewed October 12, 2026
Sharing a PDF instead of a Word file means the recipient sees the document the way you intended, on any device, without needing Word or worrying about edits. Here is how to turn a DOCX file into a PDF with Anvil, and what to check before you send it.
Convert DOCX to PDF in four steps
- Open the Documents tool.
- Drop your DOCX file onto the upload area, or click to browse. The limit is 50 MB.
- Under From choose DOCX, and under To choose PDF.
- Press Convert, then download the PDF.
How the conversion works
Anvil reads the structure of your document (headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, bold and italic text, links and images) and lays it out as a clean, paginated PDF using the WeasyPrint rendering engine. It rebuilds the document from its content, so the page you get is a tidy, readable version of the text rather than a pixel copy of what Word shows on screen.
For reports, letters, essays, study notes and other text-focused documents this works well. Headings keep their hierarchy, lists stay lists, and links remain clickable.
What may look different
Some Word features depend on Word's own layout engine and do not translate exactly. Check these before you share the PDF:
- Headers, footers and page numbers set up through Word's page layout.
- Text boxes, shapes, floating images and tightly positioned graphics.
- Fonts. The PDF uses its own clean typeface, so custom fonts and exact type styling are not carried over.
- Tracked changes and comments. Accept or remove them in Word first so they do not confuse the output.
- Complex multi-column layouts and very precise spacing.
If your document depends on an exact layout, such as a designed resume, a brochure or a form, use Word's own Save as PDF command instead. It uses the same engine that built the page.
Before you convert: a short checklist
- Accept or reject all tracked changes and delete comments.
- Skim the document for stray blank pages or oversized images that you can trim.
- Save the file as .docx. Older .doc files should be re-saved in the newer format first.
- Check the converted PDF once from top to bottom, especially tables and images, before you send it to anyone.
Why choose PDF at all?
A PDF looks the same on every phone, laptop and printer. It is the standard format for invoices, applications, contracts and anything you want to be read exactly as written. It is also harder to change by accident, though a PDF is not a security measure on its own.
If you need to edit a PDF later, you can turn it back into Word with the guide on converting PDF to DOCX. Keep your original DOCX file as the master copy whenever you can.
